Cadman Cranes Utilises Hoeflon C10 at Broomfield Hospital
We pride ourselves on tackling the kind of lifting challenges that demand precision, planning, and the right specialist equipment. Our recent project at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford is a textbook example of how the Hoeflon C10 Spider Crane enhances our ability to deliver expert lifting services where traditional equipment simply can’t go.

Overcoming Restricted Access with Innovative Equipment
Commissioned by JW Steele on behalf of the NHS, the project required the installation of a new stainless steel ventilation stack. While the lifting operation itself was relatively straightforward, the working environment presented multiple logistical challenges. The hospital’s internal roadways needed to remain open for staff and emergency vehicles, eliminating the option of using a large mobile crane. Inside, access was limited to narrow corridors and doorways, making conventional lifting methods impractical.
These are the types of challenges the Hoeflon C10 Spider Crane was made to solve. With its compact footprint and robust lifting capacity, the C10 allowed us to execute the lift safely and efficiently without compromising on performance.

The Hoeflon C10: Small Frame, Big Impact
The Hoeflon C10 is one of the most adaptable machines in our specialist lifting equipment fleet. It can be retracted to just 80cm in width, enabling it to pass through tight doorways and navigate compact spaces. Despite its small size, the crane has an impressive lifting capacity of up to 4 tonnes, making it suitable for heavy-duty applications in constrained environments.
Additional features include:
- Remote-controlled operation for high-precision handling
- Non-marking tracks to protect flooring and interior finishes
- Custom emissions controls, including a bespoke Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
To ensure full compliance with indoor environmental standards, our in-house workshop team proactively designed and fabricated the DPF system during the lead-up to the lifting day. This ensured the equipment was ready to operate smoothly and safely from the moment it arrived on site.
Meticulous Planning for Smooth Execution
Before the lift, our appointed person (AP) team conducted a detailed site assessment, mapping out the crane’s access route and confirming the feasibility of its operation within the hospital layout. We collaborated closely with JW Steele’s on-site team to modify scaffolding configurations, ensuring both safety and stability during crane operation.
Thanks to this level of preparation and the Hoeflon C10’s versatility, we were able to complete the entire lifting operation in just one day—minimising disruption to hospital services and maintaining our client’s project timeline.

New Capability for Cadman Cranes
This project demonstrates how Cadman Cranes continues to invest in advanced machinery and expert planning to deliver exceptional outcomes. The addition of the Hoeflon C10 Spider Crane to our fleet means we can now serve an even broader range of industries and applications—particularly in urban, commercial, and industrial environments with restricted access.
If your project requires precision lifting in compact spaces, Cadman Cranes has the expertise and equipment to get the job done.
