Traffic Management and Road Closures for Safe and Efficient Contract Lift Services
Working in towns and cities often brings challenges that go well beyond the lift itself. Narrow streets, parking restrictions and tight working areas can quickly complicate a project. Add in the need for road closures, diversions and permissions from the local authority, and the logistics can become just as complex as the lift.
These challenges highlight why early planning is so important. Road closures and traffic management often involve multiple authorities, competing priorities and lengthy approval processes. Coordinating these groups can be just as critical to success as selecting the right crane or lifting method. Even a straightforward modular installation may require months of preparation to secure temporary traffic orders, suspend parking bays and agree diversion routes, all before the crane arrives on site.
Why traffic management matters in lifting projects
Managing traffic during a lift is rarely straightforward. Councils, highways teams, transport operators and residents all have a stake in how closures or diversions are handled. Without proper planning, projects can be delayed, deliveries blocked, communities disrupted, and safety compromised if vehicles and pedestrians are not kept clear of lifting operations.
The process is also time-consuming. Councils may require weeks or even months of notice to issue temporary traffic orders, public consultations may need to take place, and multiple authorities such as Transport for London, highways teams or emergency services must be consulted. Without forward planning, deadlines can quickly slip, which is why factoring in traffic management from the start of a contract lift is so important.
Although road closures are most often associated with busy urban areas, they are also a feature of rural and industrial lifting projects. Infrastructure schemes, renewable energy installations and rail upgrades often demand temporary closures or diversions to allow abnormal loads to be moved safely. Whatever the setting, the principles remain the same: keeping the public safe, maintaining a controlled working zone, and coordinating with local authorities to minimise disruption.
How we manage road closures as part of contract lift services
When a project requires road closures or diversions, we can take full responsibility for the process as part of our contract lift services. This removes the burden from our customers and ensures everything is handled by an experienced, accredited team.
Our service can cover:
- Detailed route assessments and site access planning
- Liaising with councils, highways authorities and Transport for London
- Working with traffic management contractors to design safe systems
- Organising parking bay suspensions, diversions and full or partial road closures
- Coordinating escort vehicles and on-site personnel to manage traffic and pedestrian flows
- Producing risk assessments and method statements
- Taking on the legal and operational risk so our customers do not have to
By taking control of these time-consuming processes, we keep projects on schedule and provide customers with the reassurance that nothing has been overlooked.
MY-FAB: Experience in action
Two recent projects with modular building specialist MY-FAB highlight the importance of careful planning and traffic management in lifting operations. Both jobs presented very different challenges, but together they demonstrate how our contract lift service can manage the logistics as well as the lift itself.
Cornwall Road, Waterloo – Modular installation beside a 24/7 bus station

One of our most recent projects took place on Cornwall Road in Waterloo, working for MY-FAB to install 24 prefabricated modules. The site was directly beside a busy Transport for London bus station that operates around the clock, meaning daytime work was not an option.
Working with TfL and Lambeth Council, we agreed to complete the job across five consecutive night shifts. This required full road and footpath closures each night, along with carefully designed diversions for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Planning alone took more than 13 months, with detailed discussions to secure approvals, design safe closures, and coordinate delivery schedules. Each module required escort vehicles, and our on-site personnel worked closely with traffic management contractors to maintain safe access for buses and residents throughout. Using our Liebherr LTM 1110-5.1 mobile crane, the team delivered every lift safely and on schedule, ensuring the project was completed without affecting daytime bus operations.

The Willow on Broadwaters Primary School, Tottenham

We also supported MY-FAB with a modular installation at The Willow on Broadwaters Primary School in Tottenham. The site is located within a residential estate, surrounded by one-way systems, restricted roads and traffic-calming bollards, which required careful planning to ensure safe access for the crane and modules.
Over weeks of planning and site visits, we worked with Haringey Council and other stakeholders to secure the permissions needed to make it happen. This included:
- Suspending more than 80 parking bays and relocating 14 disabled bays
- Gaining approval to travel against a one-way street
- Closing the road and T-junction outside the school for crane positioning
- Coordinating CBR testing and remedial groundworks to strengthen the car park
- Installing HD Trackway to protect the surface
- Trimming trees along the boundary to avoid jib restrictions
Each module required an escort vehicle, with one needing a police escort. Our on-site personnel managed vehicle and pedestrian flows throughout, working closely with traffic management teams. Using our Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 at full ballast, we completed the installation across two days with minimal disruption.

The complete picture
Traffic management and road closures are not separate from lifting projects. They are a fundamental part of ensuring safe, efficient and compliant operations. When required, we provide a complete contract lift solution that covers both the crane hire and the logistics surrounding it.
Whether in a busy city centre, beside a live transport hub, or on a rural road, our experience in managing road closures for contract lift projects means we can deliver complex lifts while keeping disruption to a minimum.
